I have fallen in love with Seville! We made a quick stopover on our way through to Lisbon but after spending only a day and night in this beautiful city I am wishing we’d stayed much longer. Our apartment was located right in the heart of the old section of the city, with an amazing view of the surrounding rooftops and the Cathedral. We were also a very short walk to many very popular plazas where we sat, ate tapas, drank sangria and watched the world go by.

We certainly made the most of our very short time there. A three hour walking tour this morning took us through Seville’s heart where we learned so much about its history and its culture. The imposing Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See (no, not a typo), is apparently the largest in the world. The Cathedral began life as a mosque and still has the original minaret – now the bell tower. We learned about the city’s dark history during the Spanish Inquisition, where those refusing to convert to Catholicism were executed in the town square. We were also surprised to learn that the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza still hosts bull fights each week from April to October – the last one for the season was held only a few days ago. And we were especially blown away by the stunning Plaza de Espana, built for the Ibero American Exposition, held in 1929.

Beautiful Sevilla – I’ll be returning one day soon to explore some more.
